Curator > Re-Drawing Resistance
Re-Drawing Resistance is an international collective that uses art to educate and raise awareness around the complexities of gender based violence and to build a support network for survivors and witnesses throughout the South Asian Diaspora.
Serena and her colleague Prasanna Poornachandra birthed the concept of Re-Drawing Resistance at the International Society for Health and Human Rights Conference in 2005. Via partnerships with service providers around the world, Re-Drawing gathers artwork created by South Asian women who are survivors of gender-based violence and curates tours that display the artwork and communicate messages of strength and resilience. Re-Drawing Resistance tours have all been launched at the Queens Museum of Art in New York City and have traveled within and outside of the U.S.
After one of the exhibit openings, a participant shared, “We hide so many feelings in our hearts and say nothing, but when I paint and show my fears and feelings through art, that is so effective….this exhibit shows that we are a group of women who had no source to channel our pain into but found something that allows us to protest for freedom and independence.” This is the impact Re-Drawing Resistance has on women!
